About This Workshop
This lively presentation will explore the rationale for and practical application of humour in clinical practice and psychotherapy. Humour can create change in the central aspects of human experience—cognitions, emotions, behaviours, and physiology.
The principle goals of counselling and therapeutic interventions include assisting clients to feel better and behave differently. To achieve these goals, clinicians create interventions that target feelings, behaviours, thoughts, and/or biochemistry. Each major theoretical approach targets one or more of these aspects of human process. (Humanistic—feelings/emotions; behavioural/reality—behaviours; cognitive/RET— thoughts; and psychopharmacology—biochemistry/physiology). Humour activates change in all four of these areas, thus making it a powerful tool for clinical intervention.
Participants will learn a model (based on research and clinical theory) of how humour intervenes therapeutically to help relieve psychological distress, as well as how humour promotes physical health and wellness. They will also learn how the experience of humour can build the therapeutic alliance, thus promoting positive therapeutic outcome for clients. In addition, while many therapists understand how humour may assist in the development of the clinical relationship, this program will greatly expand that knowledge by demonstrating how humour can be used as a diagnostic tool as well as a clinical treatment strategy.
The differences between constructive and destructive humour will be addressed, and participants will learn strategies for processing humour interventions that are either well received or poorly received by clients
