About This Workshop
Brief therapies have become accepted as viable approaches for working with a range of individual and family problems. Yet, many agencies and practitioners have hesitated to consider such collaborative and competency-based approaches with what are viewed as more complex and “pathological” systems. This includes: families with members having major psychiatric disorders, families with multiple agency involvements, families with members in hospital or residential placements, and families with intergenerational patterns of poverty, violence and/or abuse.
With these populations a small percentage of clients can require a great amount of limited resources. Clearly no one approach is ideal for dealing with multi-stressed and multi-challenged families. This workshop will draw on ideas from a range of brief therapies and other relevant approaches which are useful for engaging overwhelming family systems in a manner that maintains hope, focus and manouverability. A consultation frame will be discussed as a better fit with some attachment styles. Videotape and exercises will be used to highlight concepts relevant to improving collaboration, working with ambivalence about change, and contracting for workable goals when chaos appears to reign.
