About This Workshop

At any one time, about 1 in 20 children and adolescents suffers from major depressive disorder (MDD). Cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) is a skills-based treatment based on the assumption that depression is either caused by or maintained by deficient social cognitive skills for coping with stress. Among the behavioural and cognitive skill deficits that may characterize a depressed youth are low levels of involvement in pleasant activities, poor problem-solving and social skills, difficulty regulating affect, cognitive distortions that negatively bias perceptions, negative automatic thoughts and negative views of self and future. This workshop will provide participants with CBT skills necessary to treat adolescents with depression and the techniques to help adolescents learn new ways of behaving or thinking, in an effort to resume social activities, improve family relationships, and improve school performance.
